CHAPTER SEVEN

Juliet heard the knock at the door and her head twisted around, her heart jumping in her throat. Was it Jonathon?

But only Lord Smith walked through the door. “My lady,” he said with a stiff bow. “Have you recovered?”

“I have,” she whispered. “Thank you. Where is Mister Richmond?”

Lord Smith’s mouth set in a deep frown. “He’s back in the water pulling out traps.” Then he took a half step closer. “Be very careful with that man. He’s not at all what he seems.”

She frowned. What did that mean?

But before she could ask, Lord Smith continued. “I am staying at the inn in the village. I shall return in the morning before I begin my journey home. But please know, I’m only a half day’s ride if you ever need assistance.”

She gave a brief nod. “Thank you, Lord Smith.”

“See you in the morning, Lady Juliet.” And then he stepped out, closing the door behind him.

Juliet sat in front of the fire, allowing the flames to warm her for the longest time as she considered those words. What did he mean? In what way could Mr. Richmond not be what he’d claimed. He was a man who’d helped her. A man who gave aid to the people of the village.

She finally rose from the chair and made her way to her room, putting on the sturdiest and warmest clothes she had, which were admittedly not her best. Those were currently still drying out by the fire.

With a sigh, she plunked her fur-lined bonnet on her head, grabbing her muff and her fur-lined pelisse. She’d been too cold today to wear anything but her warmest attire.

She pulled her shoulders straight as she made her way toward the door, determined to see if Jonathon was still on the beach.

But she stopped short when another knock sounded at the door. Was this what it was like to be sought after? It was a bit disconcerting.

She peeked out the window, a smile touching her lips to see Jonathon standing by the door, and this time, he was fully dressed.

She opened the door with a smile. “I’m glad you’re here.” Truth be told, she’d been worried when he hadn’t returned with Lord Smith. What had transpired between the two men?

“Are you?” he asked, his face set in hard lines. “How was your farewell with Lord Smith?”

“I was going to ask you the same,” she said as she stepped out the door, coming close to Jonathon. She’d expected him to step back and offer his arm. Could he not see that she was dressed for the picnic they’d discussed earlier? “Shall we discuss as we walk down to the beach?”

He gave a stiff nod. “I’ve built a fire to keep you warm.”

That made her relax. He’d clearly planned to have her join him. Somehow, she’d been afraid that Lord Smith had frightened Jonathon away. Lord Smith was a powerful second son to an earl and a strikingly tall man in his own right.

But her friendship with Jonathon was critical to her future, as were her dreams of more than a friendship with him.
